Whilst browsing the Birmingham Mail archives the other day I stumbled upon a picture of former Baggies midfielder Enzo Maresca.
He joined them on a free transfer and at the end of his time at The Hawthorns he moved for a sizeable fee to Juventus.
Steven Paolo Wilkes My mom when out with him for a while when he was with us mother being italian prob made him feel more at home .... top bloke top player x
Daniel Taylor Adi There's a blast from the past. I think he was probably too good for us at the time, he could have been a premiership player.
Kev Millard Still remember his speech when he left I will return one day arrivaderchi or however u spell it I hope he keeps his word and does return
Martyn Todd A gem of a find, brought a much needed touch of class and creativity to a team who desperately needed that cutting edge
Steven Hill One of the most skillfull players I've ever seen, even as such a young kid. If he'd have had just an extra half a yard pace could have been unbelievable
Jack Willetts Wasn't seen enough due to his age and our predicament at the time. Scored a belter at Palace and at 18 it was evident he was class- was bizarre he joined us as he was rated in Italy too.
Matt Graham One of the best players we had in the very bleak days of the 1990s. A player of immense quality and talent at 18, and by far the most skillful in the squad at the time. Couldn't believe someone that good arrived at the Albion, and was then later sold t...See More
Darren Brace ever lasting memory was Palace away about 99/00 ish..Hughes scored 1st and remember arranging with my mate if Maresca scored we were off to soho and what happened...SCREEEAMER..!! class act in an average side but wouldve fitted in any Abion side over t...See More
Graham John He never really excited me because we were in a state and he was never going to help us get anywhere. Battling players were more important in those days.
Patrick Hayward He was a skillful midfielder. Possessed great technical abilities. Unfortunately, under our chairman at the time, Tony Hale, Albion were losing £30,000 a week. We had to sell him and Kevin Kilbane to prevent a precarious financial situation. We got very good money for him.
Nick 'Nicko' Astbury Ticked all the boxes for someone so young, almost rejoined us a few yrs back i believe... but we got Valero instead... nuf said on that
Mark Daniel I remember the first game at the hawthorns after he left, a letter was read out that he had written thanking us all for supporting him during his time at the Albion, nice touch from such a young player
Kristian Green His career after us proved his quality. The lad was a class act and made every other player on the park look below average. If only we had him now.
Chris Henson He was a square peg in a round hole at the time but great to watch, it was nice to see him get man of the match for Sevilla years later with his two goals against Middlesborough (I think) in the Uefa Cup Final 2007.
Joe Mangan A ray of sunshine in a dark period under Brian Little. Always looked a class above the rest of the side, even Sneekes
Jack Simms My first season going up he was there quality player gutted when he left wouldnt mind him back! Helped us consolidate in championship when we were dog rubbish which ultimately led to us being where we are now. Got good money for him too
Dominic Hill He was superb. I ray of sunshine during a grey and miserable period for the club. We had a team full of unmotivated, journeyman footballers and then suddenly in this sea of dross appeared an intelligent, talented footballer with flair and technique ...See More
Glen Hillsmith I remember being at the McAlpine/Galpharm/(whatever Huddersfield were calling it back then), on what I believe was his full debut. As an 18/19-year-old, Enzo absolutely ran the show, and enabled Albion to win 3-0 at a previously unbeaten-at-home Terriers outfit. Had great attributes except a yard of pace. Forza Enzo.
Daniel Hisgett To this day he is still the only name I have ever had on the back of an Albion shirt, it's just a shame he left in the very next transfer window. I don't know whether or not the signings were related, but I always though Mario Bortolazzi must have been a big reason for him joining us and for some I'm now remembering a pre-season friendly at Halesowen Town, no wonder he left for Juventus.
Cathy 'Mosher' Foster He was an outstanding player who stood out as someone who would go on to bigger and better things. I'm pretty sure it got to the point where her got man of the match almost every week. His football brain was almost too much for the players around him,...See More
Ali Bray would say he was one of my all time favourite Albion players... I even bought a superman t-shirt to wear under my shirt whilst playing because of him, still wear it to this day!! ENZO MARESCA!!
Richard 'Simo' Sims A good player that found himself in a very poor albion side back then....good for the chairmans pocket tho....signed for free sold for £5m.
Christiaan Wallett Like Sneekes, ahead of his time in the team he was in. Saw things that no one else would, not even his own team mates.
Ray Allden Absolute class act. Couldn't believe the idiot Brian Little not playing him. When sold, the money rebuilt WBA. Great player.
KevSmith IMO Enzo was the saviour of WBA he walked in as teenage Italian under 21 captain cost nothin sold for a then massive £4.5m
jason phillips graceful, gifted, right player for club at the wrong time, bargain and money maker - sums up the #WBA mentality #wellrunclub
Andrew Wakeman he was very talented but lacked that burst of pace that would have made him world class as his failure st Juve proved
andy marsh fine young player his sale enabled.club to sign Santos butler clement and Taylor again Denis smith signing
Craig Harrison perhaps the best creative midfielder I've ever seen play for us, a joy to watch unfortunately ahead of us at the time
Stuart Walker Next bryan robson.Close touch and dribbles.Vision. Superman tshirt. Mario bortilazzi. And all thanks to.... Dennis smith
James McCreedy His sale probably set the club off in the right direction for where they are today. He was worth every penny of the fee too.
Lee Goode I met him after the Oxford game where he ran the show won the MOM he was with his parents spoke little English seemed shy
Hero. 1st player I saw at wba with that level of talent. I still wear a blue superman t under my shirt when I play 5-a-side.
Tom Bettam he was a class above in an age of very average players. Always remember the duck style celebration. #wba #westbrom
Paul Wooding Enzo gave WBA fans a reason to be cheerful when there was little to cheer. He allowed us to believe we were still a big club
Paul hoult when you saw him play, he looked so comfortable and relaxed on the ball and his vision was way beyond his years.
Baggie_Russ such a talent at such a young age, probably too good for us at the time, what price to have him in the current team?
