Fulham church gets new statue to restore one taken by robbers - Fulham Chronicle

The Reverend Canon Joe Hawes was aphysically shockeda by the theft of The Mother and Son or daughter from the churchyard last August, probably to market as scrap metal. He instantly called the bronze statueas author, sculptor Helen Sinclair whoAwas equally disappointed, and pledged to create a substitute. But which was no easy task as she doesn't keep moulds of her designs and had to get hold of customers who bought the look. After borrowing yet another model, she remoulded the A2,000 sculpture, but this time around made it in resin to put off scrap steel robbers. The new statue was erected by residents and blessed on Easter Sunday, much to the delight of Mr Hawes and his parishioners. He said: aIt is completely fascinating to have it straight back and acutely moving to have it blessed on this kind of . Sally only charged for the expense of the resources, that was extremely kind, and most people are happy to have it back.a During the time, Mr Hawes said the theft severely tested his tendency to reduce and, regardless of the happy ending, he remains angry. He said: amazement do eliminate since that's what we do however it is not easy. Because the sum of money the robbers might have got was probably about A200, which calculated much less than the mental distress it caused the church it was very hard for us to cope with. aIndeed, I'm sure the parishioners would have found A200 when it would have meant the statue was kept safe, but at the least this story has some kind of happy ending.a Parishioner Fiona Mylchreest added: aIf the thieves come again, the church can remain firm. God isn't broken, just our world.a
