Governor Charlie (2-1 favorite) broke the track record on the way to a five-lengths win at the G3 $500,000 Sunland Derby at Sunland Park late Sunday. Experienced by Bob Baffert, the nine-furlongs distance was covered by him in 1:47.54, eclipsing the last history of 1:48.20. Some early speed was shown by show Some Magic ( 24-1 ) on the competition from his ninth article, but Saint Prado (10-1) and Abraham (7-2) were told to leading and took the original fractional in a fast 22.74. Martin Garcia located Governor Charlie only to their outside in third, followed by Show Some Magic and Just Win Baby (19-1). The entire field was very small as they went to the backstretch with the positions unchanged until they reached the three-quarter post. Garcia made his move on the exterior with Governor Charlie once he thought the move by Show Some Magic just behind him because they entered the far turn. Governor Charlie took a half-length lead to the top of the home-stretch being challenged by Show Some Magic, but as the stretch is entered by them, Garcia asked Governor Charlie for his all and he replied drawing away clear for the five length win. Show Some Magic ran a huge competition for 2nd, concluding just over three lengths in front of Abraham, who fought back again to finish third. He was working fifth in early stages and had to rally four broad and complete the battle second. Abraham involved Saint Prado through the first fractionsa'as did Governor Charliea'and valiantly fought on to overcome a reliable third place a length ahead of one other Bob Baffert-trained horse Shakin It Up (2-1), who rallied from last place to finish fourth just a nose ahead of Stormdriver. It was an unsatisfactory finish for Shakin It Up, who was the day line favorite and was likely to challenge the win together with his stablemate. Jockey David Flores had him last until he started to move at the three-quarter post, but could only manage a mild rally on the inside. Stormdriver, Mudflats, Saint Prado, Dry Summer and Just Win Baby finished the order of finish. The Sunland Derby was the final of the Kentucky Derby qualifying contests, distributing 85 points to the first four finishers. The success earned 50, second place 20, third place 10 and fourth five points. The 50 points earned by Governor Charlie guaranteed in full him a spot on the gate of the Run for the Roses the initial Saturday of May. He now could be in third devote the things, standing behind Will Need Charge and Vyjack. Show Some Magic's 20 points place him in 15th place, Abraham's 10 points move him into the 26th spot and the five points by Shakin It Up place him in 35th place. The track record was broken by governor Charlie, but we ought to not look too much involved with it. Not downplaying his performance, but take into account that there have been two different track records broken on the card today, and the track was playing really fast. No real matter what, we are looking at an extremely skilled horse that keeps improving, and make sure Bob Baffert will have him prepared for the Kentucky Derby. Governor Charlie is just a daughter of Midnight Lute out of Silverbulletway, by Storm Cat. He was foaled Feb 23, 2010 in Kentucky and was bred by his owner Mike Pegram. His report now stands at 3-2-1-0 with life time earnings of $444,800. It'd be nice to own a minumum of one more race on him ahead of the Derby, with only three job starts, but with only six weeks left, that'll be unlikely.
