Pardew: We knew Papiss might come good - ChronicleLive

Alan Pardew asserts he never had any doubts Papiss Cisse wouldnat find his goalscoring contact - thanks to the strikeras self worth Newcastle United striker Papiss Cisse Alan Pardew yesterday evening unveiled he always knew Papiss Cisse would come great this year because he had never been never deserted by the strikeras self-confidence. The Newcastle United manager constantly kept faith with the Senegalese striker whose 93rd-minute header on Thursday against Anzhi Makhachkala sent the Magpies in to the Europa League quarter-finals. Cisse has compensated Pardew with three objectives in his last four games, two of them injury-time winners, which has taken his tally to a respectable or even exceptional 10 for the growing season. A comparison was drawn by pardew with the continuing challenges of Fernando Torres who appears to have dropped every iota of his self-belief, for the reason that he didnat feel like their own No 9 was going right on through a similar never-ending situation. The Toon manager said: aI think that sometimes you can look at strikers and know where they're (psychologically). aYou can look at Torres in a few activities and he doesnat look right. aBut I hardly ever really thought that with Papiss, if Iam straightforward. He's another form of player. aHe has a confidence in his capacity, but the goals definitely give a lift to you. aPeople get in the zone, you hear about any of it, and I think heas in a goalscoring zone. aSome of his build-up play this season, which he did so well last season in the wide area, hasnat been so great, but heas focused on goals so you've surely got to get that balance right. Goals certainly change a strikeras mentality. aHis energy and work rate for people has been high grade all year. Nevertheless when you get those particular goals and those critical times, itas got to give you a raise. aHe will surely perform on Sunday against Wigan, thatas for sure.a
