Stoke City: Charlie Adam dedicated winning goal to his dad - This is Staffordshire

Adam's father, Charlie senior, died, aged 50, in December. The outpouring of emotion was obvious as the midfielder netted and then looked to the sky.

THANKS A LOT: Stoke's Charlie Adam thanks the fans for their support after scoring the only goal of the game on Saturday.

He said: "It's been a tough time. It's the first goal I've scored since I lost my dad. When you get on the pitch it gives you a lease of life. It's just great to score and when I'm on the pitch it's always about him and it's difficult.

"He's always been an influence in my career. When you get a goal and opportunity like that it's hard to pass by. I know he'll be watching and hopefully there's many more to come.

"I've got a son of my own and you always look up to your dad. It's one of those things when you lose somebody like that, it's an emotional time.

"But for me the only chance of getting on with life is on the football pitch and I've managed to do that. Hopefully I can get a run in the team now, try to score as many goals as I can and help the team."

He said: "That's a fair comment, but I've had to bide my time, sit on the sidelines and watch and it's been difficult.

"I'm one of these players who wants to play every week, but it's great to get an opportunity to get back in the team again. Now hopefully getting over 40 points would be nice.

Adam has started City's last three games, but has been in and out of the side since his £4m move from Liverpool on August 31.

"I respect the manager, what he does and what he thinks. At the end of the day the most important thing is the football club, not any individual.

"The most important thing is that we survive in this league. We've got an opportunity to do that now and hopefully we can do that in the next couple of weeks."

The goal was Adam's third of the season and was scored as he burst into the area, connecting with Peter Crouch's header to drill the ball past Canaries keeper Mark Bunn.

Most of Adam's Stoke games have been played behind the striker in Tony Pulis's favoured 4-4-1-1 system, but for the last two matches the Scot has been used on the right of midfield.

He said: "The two strikers did well to block and shield the defenders off and I managed to nip in there. That's what you can do from that side of the pitch, you can come in from the touchline.

"Any goal is nice. It doesn't matter whether it's a tap-in or what. Hopefully the confidence can go to next week. We've got a tough game away to Sunderland.

"Away from home we haven't been as good as we would like, but we'll be ready and hopefully three points here will give us confidence for next week."

Stoke looked in serious relegation trouble following their defeat at home to Aston Villa a fortnight ago, but back-to-back wins, at QPR and at home to Norwich, have lifted City to 40 points.

He said: "After the Villa game it wasn't looking too good. We've dug in there and it's not over yet. Another couple of wins would be nice and it'd be nice to do it in style."
